JOHN F. GOSSON

John F. Gosson, 88, of Lakeland, passed away peacefully Thursday August 20, 2026 at Upstate University Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Syracuse to the late James and Mary (Coyne) Gosson and was a proud graduate of Solvay High School and US Air Force Veteran, serving with the 108th in Berlin. John was the service manager at Val’s Motor’s in Lakeland for more than 50 years. He was a Town of Geddes Councilman for 24 years, past President of the Geddes Vet’s, Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus #4114, Faithful Navigator #4114, a member of the Solvay Tigers AC and Solvay-Geddes Community Youth Center, Solvay Hilltop Club, past Commissioner of Lakeside Fire Department, communicant of St. Marianne Cope Parish-Our Lady of Peace Church and member of its Holy Name Society. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, James and Richard, in-laws, Louis Sr and Margaret Valerino and his brother-in-law, Louis Valerino, Jr. John is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, the former Marlene Valerino; daughter, Renee (Dwayne Holcombe) Filippi; sons, Ronald (Lisa Messina), Randy (Jane), Robert (Jennifer Kinney) and Richard (Kathy) Gosson; 8 grandchildren, Nicholas (Samantha) and Thomas (Gina Lazara) Filippi, Maddie, Nicole and Daniel Gosson, Lydia (Rich) Ewell, Teresa Higgins and Stephanie Ellis; great grandchildren, Nicholas Filippi, Jr, Lainey Grace Filippi (arriving Sept. 2026), Chase and Carter Higgins, Emma Gosson, Walker and Forrest Ellis; one sister-in-law, Antoinette Valerino and many nieces and nephews. John was also known as “Papa G” to some very wonderful people who he truly loved, Jim, Vee, Jamie, Jessica, James Jianna and Jack Carsten, Antionetta, Cameron, Cole and Charlotte Brieant, Zack Weigand and Jeff, Lisa, Blake, Brielle, Brock and Brayla Bagozzi. Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday August 25, 2026 at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Ave, Solvay. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9:30 AM Wednesday August 26, 2026 at St. Marianne Cope Parish–Our Lady of Peace Church, 203 Halcomb St, Lakeland. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum, DeWitt.
