CARMELA SPICCIATI

Carmela (Zingaro) Spicciati, passed away on January 20th, 2024, at the age of 89. Carmela was a vivacious and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Carmela was born to the late Angelo and Incoronata (Ciaramella) Zingaro on July 14th, 1934, in Mirabello, Sannitico, Italy. Carmela and her family came to Syracuse, NY, in 1971. She lived independently, taking care of herself and her home until she passed. Carmela was the vibrant matriarch of the Spicciati family who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She loved to work in her flower garden and make sauce, always cooking for her loved ones. Carmela had an “open door” policy and valued entertaining (and feeding) visitors. She enjoyed celebrating family birthdays with a dinner out to Chinese or pizza in her backyard. You could find Carmela playing cards most weekends, or any other time someone had some change they were willing to lose. When she wasn’t with her family, Carmela spent her time knitting, creating “toys” for her great grandchildren, or talking to neighbors. One of her favorite things to do was play the slots at the casino whenever she could talk her son into taking her. As a devout Catholic, Carmela’s faith was an integral part of her life. Carmela was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Antonio Spicciati and her grandson, Michael Ponza. She is survived by her two children, Josephine (Biagio) Ponza, of Camillus and Frank (Anne) Spicciati, of Liverpool. She was a proud grandmother to Joseph Ponza, Anthony (Roxanne) Spicciati, Stephanie Spicciati, Kimberly (Matthew) Pyle, and Angela Spicciati, and granddaughter-in-law, Elizabeth Ponza. Carmela also loved spending time with her seven great grandchildren. Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday January 25, 2024 at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Avenue. Funeral services will be held 9:15 AM Friday, January 26, 2024 at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME and 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr, Syracuse, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
